New Report Sheds Light on the Current Reality of Hadoop Projects Among Data Professionals
SAN FRANCISCO, CA--(Marketwire - Mar 20, 2013) - RainStor today released the results of a survey of data management professionals that are planning, sandboxing or running Hadoop to manage and analyze Big Data. Conducted by Dimensional Research and sponsored byRainStor, provider of an enterprise database for Big Data, the survey reveals that 24 percent have Hadoop in production and 19 percent are managing more than 500 terabytes (TB). Information gathered from the survey reveals a growing interest in Hadoop as a platform with a number of projects that have made it past the planning or pilot stages and into production.
Big Data is a reality for large enterprises today with some industry sectors required to manage larger data estates because of external data-driven industry regulations. Additionally, business users are now demanding access to broader and more detailed data for greater insights where analyzing aggregated data is no longer adequate. The survey was conducted at the O'Reilly Strata event, held in Santa Clara, Calif., in February 2013, to better understand both the business value derived from Big Data projects as well as to identify the challenges faced by practitioners. The results are in and you can now download the reporthere.
Key findings:
- 24 percent have Hadoop projects in production.
- 19 percent currently manage more than 500 TB of data with Hadoop.
- Hadoop is chosen for low cost scalability.
- 88 percent of respondents have faced challenges with Hadoop.
"We were happy to learn that 24 percent of respondents had projects in production," said Deirdre Mahon, VP of marketing for RainStor. "Hadoop is being adopted by the enterprise at a very fast pace, but there is also no doubt that developers are struggling with the platform such as manual coding, not real-time and lack of skilled resources. What the enterprise needs to speed-up adoption is high performance, ease-of-use and security -- essentially what they have come to expect with enterprise-grade data management software."
